The Role of Tea in Our Society
The history of tea as we know it today dates back to the mid 1600's, when it was first imported into the United Kingdom by the East Indian Company from China. Numerous legends recount the discovery of tea from various regions of China as far back as 1500 BCE where it was first used for medicinal purposes.
Over the course of history, China developed a strong hold in the production of tea and the growing of tea trees and leaves. To compete, the U.K. exported tea production into India through the British East India Company, where they used Chinese seeds and planting techniques.
Meanwhile in the U.K., British drinkers began to transition from green tea to black tea and used milk and sugar to overcome its bitterness. It was in the mid 17th century that it became a national beverage in the U.K. and from there, tea began aggressively exported to other parts of the world by the start of the 18th century.
Today's tea consumption is as popular as ever, and Canadian consumption alone is expected to jump 40% by 2020 according to the Canadian Food Trends to 2020 report.
